THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF pH AND CARBON DIOXIDE TENSION IN DETERMINING THE CESSATION OF CILIARY MOVEMENT IN ACIDIFIED SEA WATER
نویسنده
چکیده
The length of time that cilia from the gills of Mylilus continue to beat in acidified sea water depends to some extent on the pH of the solution but to a greater extent on its carbon dioxide tension.

Effects of ocean acidification on the immune response of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis
The effects of medium term (32 d) hypercapnia on the immune response of Mytilus edulis were investigated in mussels exposed to acidified (using CO2) sea water (pH 7.7, 7.5 or 6.7; control: pH 7.8). Levels of phagocytosis increased significantly during the exposure period, suggesting an immune response induced by the experimental set-up. However, this induced stress response was suppressed when ...
متن کاملRegulation of the Hydrogen Ion Concentration and Its Relation to Metabolism and Respiration in the Starfish
The normal reaction of the coelomic fluid in Patiria miniata and Asterias ochraceus is pH 7.6, and of the caeca, 6.7, compared with sea water at 8.3, all without salt error correction. A medium at pH 6.7-7.0 is optimum for the caeca for ciliary survival and digestion of protein, and is maintained by carbon dioxide production. The optimum pH found for carbon dioxide production is a true one for ...
متن کاملAdaptation of the Cyanobacterium fischerella sp. ISC 107 to the combined effects of pH and carbon dioxide concentration. Mahboobeh Rajabnasab1, Ramezan Ali Khavari-nejad1*, Shademan Shokravi2 and Taher Nejadsattari1
The aim of this study was to investigate the adaptation of the cyanobacterium Fischerella sp. ISC 107to combined effects of carbon dioxide concentration, acidic and alkalinity. Axenic strain was incubated in BG0-11 medium. Carbon dioxide treatments were limited and relatively non-limited. Acidic (pH 5), neutral (pH7), and alkaline (pH 9) conditions were employed in each treatment. Survival, gro...
متن کاملCrude Oil Interfacial Tension Reduction and Reservoir Wettability Alteration with Graphite or Activated Carbon/Silica Nanohybrid Pickering Emulsions
In this research, two carbon structures silica nanohybrids Pickering emulsions were prepared. Graphite and activated carbon were carbon allotropes with different morphologies of laminar and spherical, respectively. The effect of carbon morphology investigated on the related silica nanohybrids Pickeringemulsions for C-EOR. Therefore, nanohybrids were prepared with graphite and activated carbon t...
متن کاملPreconcentration and Determination of Chromium (III) from Sea Water Samples Using Ion Imprinted Activated Carbon
A simple ion imprinted amino-functionalized sorbent was synthesized by coupling activated carbon with iminodiacetic acid, a functional compound for metal chelating, through cyanoric chloride spacer. The resulting sorbent has been characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and evaluated for the preconcentration and de...
